On 01/02/1998, Officer Doug Knutson #3818 was standing in the Scottsdale Road gore area on Loop 202 when he was stuck and killed while helping a disabled motorist. Officer Knutson was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Officer Knutson was the first AZDPS motorcycle officer to be killed in the line of duty. May we never forget his sacrifice.
LODD Sergeant Manuel Tapia #1409
FOP Grand Canyon State Lodge 32
On 01/07/1991, Sergeant Manuel Tapia #1409 was shot by a suspected drug trafficker during a traffic stop in Nogales. Sergeant Tapia died the following day at the Tucson Medical Center. The suspect was located and killed by a Nogales Police Officer.
